This unusual, thought-provoking film, part science fiction, part magical realism, introduces us to the fascinating historical figure of Ada Byron King, daughter of the famous (some would say infamous) British poet, Lord Byron. Ada, brought to wondrous life here by Tilda Swinton (Orlando), was a mathematical genius far ahead of her time, who developed the world’s first computer language in the mid-19th century. She was precocious in other ways as well: her father’s daughter, Ada was sexually promiscuous, a gambler, and an opium addict. In the film, modern-day genius Emmy Coer (Francesca Faridany), working on creating artificial life via the computer, becomes obsessed with Ada. Using her own DNA, Emmy is somehow able to channel Ada’s memories and play them back on her computer screen. The two women leading parallel lives eventually become inextricably tied for all time. The movie may sound rather arcane, but its vibrantly female point of view renders it anything but dry. It actually makes mathematics seem marvelously sexy. The supporting cast adds to the film’s distinctiveness: Timothy Leary (yes, the Timothy Leary, the LSD guru), is Sims, Emmy’s spectral cybervision of a mentor, and the inimitable Karen Black appears as the mother of both Emmy and Ada. –Laura Mirsky

*** watch Affliction!! ***
Paul Schrader’s Affliction, adapted from the novel by Russell Banks (The Sweet Hereafter), charts the slow descent of small-town sheriff Wade Whitehouse (a raspy, gruffly restrained Nick Nolte) into violence, the legacy of the corrupt love of an abusive, alcoholic father. The story ostensibly centers on a hunting death on the outskirts of town, but as Wade digs into what may or not be a conspiracy, his personal life spirals out of control. James Coburn, who deservedly won an Oscar for his mocking, sneering performance, is Wade’s father, who jumps back into the cycle of abuse when Wade moves in to care for the aging man. Chronicling the story in distant, dispassionate tones is Willem Dafoe as Wade’s younger brother Rolfe, who “escaped” his father’s legacy in a world of books. Schrader has made his reputation revealing the scarred psyches of American men trying to reconcile the contradictions of masculine fantasy and social reality, as in his screenplays for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, and in Affliction he creates his most poignant and powerful work. The quiet beauty of the snow-blanketed New Hampshire setting (using Canadian locations) and Schrader’s restrained yet intimate cinematic style builds the underlying emotional tensions until they explode in startling close-ups, revealing the repressed fear, rage, and helplessness cracking through Wade’s carefully maintained faCade. As Rolfe’s narration coolly analyzes his brother’s affliction, he reveals his own: an emotional remove so complete that he’s edited himself out of his family history. The legacy of abuse leaves no one untouched. –Sean Axmaker

Everyone’s favorite desert-dwelling mutant cannibals return in this grusome sequl to the classic drive-in shocker! Years after the original massacre which pitted a suburban family against a band of cave dwellers, traumatized survivors lead a team of dirt bikers back into the wild for a bus expedition. After their vehicle breaks down, the travelers must fend for their lives when the hungry savages (led by spooky Michael Berryman) emerge from the hills in search of dinner! Directed by horror maestro Wes Craven (Scream, A Nightmare on Elm Street), this brutal chiller features shocking highlights from the original film (including the now legendary canine flashback) and an eerie score by “Friday the 13th’s” Henry Manfredini. Vicious, delirious, and outrageous!

This is a great movie! Probably one of my favorites. Marcello Mastroianni does a great job, If you’re a fan, and you haven’t seen this movie – watch it now!
Don’t know what it’s about?
Starring screen legend Marcello Mastroianni as Professor Brusci, a widower’s sedate and settled life is suddenly disrupted when his four-year-old granddaughter Papere is deposited on his doorstep. Drawing on his teaching (and grandfathering) skills, the professor is teaching her to become an upstanding young lady, when her mother suddenly returns for a visit, and her destructive streak causes layer upon layer of dissension between all involved.

One of the brighter lights to shine from the late-’90s Saturday Night Live cast permutation, Chris Rock successfully made the jump to his own HBO series and snagged a couple of Emmy Awards along the way. Part Saturday Night Live and part Arsenio Hall-style show (with a raucous studio audience), this best-of video shows that Rock has definitely grown into his own style and matured as a comedian. The segments from Rock’s early shows tend to suffer from that Saturday Night Live malady in which a one-joke skit is stretched out for an excruciating period of time (see: Mike Myers). Rock’s penchant for beating a dead horse is most apparent in his parodies of Fox-style reality-based shows (”When Animals Attack in High Speed Chases II”), which are genuinely clever but run on a little too long. However, when Rock sticks to live-action comedy, he proves he’s one of the funniest (and most satirical) comedians around, playing with issus of politics, race, and gender mercilessly. Hands down the most hilarious segment is a CNN-style “panel” on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, hosted by Rock and featuring “Black Guy,” “White Dude” and “Sista.” Most attempts at lampooning this Presidential faux pas have fallen flat on their faces, but Rock and his cast take no prisoners as they skewer the players, the media, and the “man-on-the-street” mentality surrounding the hype. Other highlights include a male version of “The Rules” as interpreted by Ike Turner, continuing coverage of the rising career of rapper Pootie-Tang and his uniqu brand of urban slang, and Rock’s petition to rename a street in Howard Beach after Tupac Shakur (one of the few pre-filmed segments that keeps its momentum going). Rock definitely proves he’s one SNL alumnus who won’t be wearing out his welcome anytime soon. –Mark Englehart

*** Download The Cameraman’s Revenge & Other Fantastic Tales Online!! ***
The legendary Ladislaw Starewicz created some of the most imaginative and loveliest works of puppet animation ever filmed. While working in Russia, he directed his first classic “The Cameraman’s Revenge” (1912), a story of love and infidelity among the insects, and the recently rediscovered “The Insect’s Christmas” (1913), a dazzlingly beautiful film of the Yuletide celebrations of a Christmas-tree ornament and his tiny friends. After relocating to Paris, Starewicz made the political allegory “Frogland” (1922), the gorgeous hand-colored fable “Voice of the Nightingale” (1923), the irresistible “The Mascot” (1933), and the snowland fantasy “Winter Carousel” (1958). Starewicz’s grasshoppers, dogs, frogs, dolls and other creatures portray heroics and follies with an exuberance of humor and invention. They will delight viewers both young and old!

*** watch The Defilers/The Scum of the Earth now!! ***
One of Lawrence J. Aberwood’s best movies. If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s no time like the present! If you’ve already seen it, it’ll be even better this time!
Here’s a double dose of drive-in depravity with two kinky classics from producer David F. Friedman! “Scum of the Earth!” (1963, 68 min.) – Trying to earn money for college, wholesome cutie Kim (Vickie Miles) is sucked into the degenerate world of the dirty picture racket when she agrees to model for the “Scum of the Earth” in this film from cult director Herschell Gordon Lewis. Under the tutelage of a sleazy photographer, Kim is soon posing topless before being blackmailed into appearing in raunchier shots, which lead to a police raid, two murders, and suicide. “The Defilers” (1965, 63 min.) are two hedonistic young men who, just for kicks, abduct a sexy blonde (Mai Jansson) as their own personal sex toy. Directed by R. Lee Frost (Love Camp 7), this shattering story of the shameless is downright nasty but you can’t look away.
